Our Story

At Zest Cape May, we set out to do more than serve great food—we’re here to craft experiences that feel personal, thoughtful, and deeply connected to this town we call home. Our mission is simple but ambitious: to redefine local dining through inspired cuisine, intentional design, and genuine hospitality. We believe food is a language—one that speaks to place, season, and soul. That’s why every dish we serve reflects the rhythms of Cape May, sourced from our own farm in Woodstown and from partners who share our passion for quality and sustainability. Whether you’re sipping cocktails at the bar, enjoying fresh seafood dockside, or lingering over a fine dining experience, we want each moment to feel unforgettable—and unmistakably Cape May.

Where It All Began

Zest was born from a love story—between co-founders Ross and Lauren Hammer, and the seaside town that brought them together. Both creative entrepreneurs with a shared spirit of grit and curiosity, Ross and Lauren have always built things with their own two hands, chasing ideas and chasing purpose. They flipped houses. Launched a candle brand. Ran a food truck. Tested, failed, dreamed, and pivoted. Every step of their journey has been guided by heart—and a fearless belief in what’s possible.

A Leap of Faith

In March 2022, they took their biggest leap yet. Ross and Lauren purchased Taco Caballito, a modest taco joint on Beach Avenue, and transformed it into a vibrant, elevated tequileria with bold flavors and ocean views. That moment lit the spark that would grow into something much larger. Soon came Port Marina, a reimagined marina destination offering dockside dining, curated cocktails, and an upscale upstairs experience that showcases the best of coastal cuisine. Followed shortly after by Fish House, a laid-back waterfront spot for fresh sandwiches and seafood.

From Soil to Sea:
A Sustainable Vision

Sustainability is not a buzzword at Zest—it’s a promise. On their Woodstown farm, Ross and Lauren raise their own animals, collect eggs on their Cape May farm, and harvest honey with care and intention. Their farming practices are guided by respect for the land, just as their fishing practices are rooted in respect for the sea. From trusted growers to our local commercial fishermen and bakers, every ingredient has a story—and we’re proud to tell it. Our menus shift with the seasons, often inspired by what’s ripe, what’s fresh, and what feels right. You’ll taste that integrity in every bite.

The Road Ahead

Zest Cape May is still growing—and the dream is far from finished. With new spaces, new ideas, and an ever-deepening connection to this community, we’re excited for what’s next. No matter how far we expand, we’ll always stay true to what started it all: good food, good people, and the belief that something magical happens when those two things come together by the water.
